As a travel nurse, you have the unique opportunity to travel the country while doing the job you love. You can head out to big cities, beach towns or small little-known communities. It’s entirely up to you. Large agencies like Cross Country Nurses work with hospitals and healthcare systems all across the U.S. and we have new opportunities that come in every day.
Of course, the freedom of a travel nurse career leads to very individualized paths and goals. However, when we decided to poll close to 550 RNs all across the country, 10 destinations reigned supreme. These are the states that nurses dream of taking assignments in — being able to discover and experience them for anywhere from 13 to 26 weeks.

Maybe it’s relaxing thought of the pristine and picturesque setting of the beaches in the Outer Banks. Perhaps, it’s the unchartered thrill of hiking the Appalachian Trail or exploring the Great Smokey Mountains. Or then again, it could be the allure of the cosmopolitan vibe mixed with the southern charm that you’ll find cities like Charlotte, Raleigh or Winston-Salem.

The Grand Canyon has to be experienced in person because no picture or film can truly capture its magnitude. Then there’s Sedona where shops, artisans and restaurants all vie for your attention. This locale won’t disappoint.

Round things out with the rodeos, ranches and wonders like Enchanted Rock and Natural Bridge.

We’re talking glaciers and grizzlies, moose and Mt. Denali, orcas and the Aurora Borealis. The sights and scenes with take your breath away and create memories of a lifetime.

The Sunshine State makes visitors happy all year round. The weather is sunny, warm and inviting and the list of things to do are never-ending. Obviously, this is home to the “Happiest Place on Earth” — a kid and kid-at-heart must experience — Disney World. Also, located right down the road in either direction is Universal Studios and SeaWorld. Plus, you have the Everglades, South Beach and Key West. Something for everybody.

There is really no place on earth like the Hawaiian Islands. The rich culture, the primal energy of the volcanoes and of course the gorgeous beaches that surround you. You can surf and hula, whale watch and attend a luau — all while doing the job you love.

Get star-struck in Hollywood, Napa, Sonoma, Santa Monica and Los Angeles. Experience Mother Nature in epic proportions when visiting the towering redwoods, Half-Dome at Yosemite, Feather Falls, and the Mammoth Pool Reservoir. Of course, you also have the San Francisco Bay area with Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge and Park and so much more. The list could just keep going… and that’s why it’s earn the coveted number one spot on our list.
