As a travel nurse, you have the unique opportunity to travel the country while doing the job you love. You can head out to big cities, beach towns or small little-known communities. It’s entirely up to you. Large agencies like Cross Country Nurses work with hospitals and healthcare systems all across the U.S. and we have new opportunities that come in every day.

Of course, the freedom of a travel nurse career leads to very individualized paths and goals. However, when we decided to poll close to 550 RNs all across the country, 10 destinations reigned supreme. These are the states that nurses dream of taking assignments in — being able to discover and experience them for anywhere from 13 to 26 weeks.

North Carolina

#10 with 8% of the vote
Maybe it’s relaxing thought of the pristine and picturesque setting of the beaches in the Outer Banks. Perhaps, it’s the unchartered thrill of hiking the Appalachian Trail or exploring the Great Smokey Mountains. Or then again, it could be the allure of the cosmopolitan vibe mixed with the southern charm that you’ll find cities like Charlotte, Raleigh or Winston-Salem.

The diversity of this state is a natural draw. Where else can you experience a majestic coastline, volcanoes, wine country, and coffee and grunge at their finest? It’s totally understanding why this destination made the list— the natural beauty, culture and cuisine that you’ll discover are epic. You’ll find your dreams answered.

There is a mystery and surreal quality to the land of Arizona. The geological formations of Antelope Canyon will take your breath away. The Grand Canyon has to be experienced in person because no picture or film can truly capture its magnitude. Then there’s Sedona where shops, artisans and restaurants all vie for your attention. This locale won’t disappoint.

Everything’s bigger in Texas… and that’s the truth! Start with the food and drink. Here the eats are huge on flavor and portions. Move on to history and we’re talking site that legends are made of — from the Alamo to grand old mansions, to sacred burial grounds, to landmarks of the Wild West and frontier forts. Round things out with the rodeos, ranches and wonders like Enchanted Rock and Natural Bridge.

This state’s world-renowned stature will never be taken away. It’s just one of those must see, must do kind of places. With the culture and excitement of Manhattan to the falls of Niagara and the wings of Buffalo… everything you experience here is iconic. Everyone wants to take a bite out of the Big Apple and we don’t blame them.

Contrary to popular believe, Colorado is more than skiing, snowboarding and winter wonderlands. This is a year-round haven for all things adventure and outdoors. From hiking and horseback riding to whitewater rafting, four-wheeling and even ballooning — you’ll never be bored on your days off and you’ll never be inside.

Alaska is a destination that many people just will never get to experience, but everyone wants too. It’s truly the last frontier in the United States and it’s totally wild and wonderful. We’re talking glaciers and grizzlies, moose and Mt. Denali, orcas and the Aurora Borealis. The sights and scenes with take your breath away and create memories of a lifetime.

The Sunshine State makes visitors happy all year round. The weather is sunny, warm and inviting and the list of things to do are never-ending. Obviously, this is home to the “Happiest Place on Earth” — a kid and kid-at-heart must experience — Disney World. Also, located right down the road in either direction is Universal Studios and SeaWorld. Plus, you have the Everglades, South Beach and Key West. Something for everybody.

Everyone wants to experience the beauty and wonder of Hawaii, but not everyone can. As a travel nurse you can come and stay for 13 or even 26 weeks. There is really no place on earth like the Hawaiian Islands. The rich culture, the primal energy of the volcanoes and of course the gorgeous beaches that surround you. You can surf and hula, whale watch and attend a luau — all while doing the job you love.

Get star-struck in Hollywood, Napa, Sonoma, Santa Monica and Los Angeles. Experience Mother Nature in epic proportions when visiting the towering redwoods, Half-Dome at Yosemite, Feather Falls, and the Mammoth Pool Reservoir. Of course, you also have the San Francisco Bay area with Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge and Park and so much more. The list could just keep going… and that’s why it’s earn the coveted number one spot on our list.
