Healthcare Job Market Shows No Signs of Weakening

Even with mass uncertainty facing healthcare reform, the demand for skilled clinicians, across all professions, remains stronger than ever. In fact, in U.S. News & World Report's recent list released, the Top-100 Best Jobs in America for 2018, healthcare professions took eight (8) of the top ten (10) spots. This list covers all sectors of employment and the top ten were as follows:

  4. Nurse practitioner
  5. Orthodontist
  6. Statistician
  7. Pediatrician

When it comes to only the healthcare market, U.S. News & World Report's list of the Top 25 Best Jobs in Healthcare had similar professions ranking in the top ten.

  5. Pediatrician
  6. OB-GYN (tie)
  7. Oral and maxillofacial surgeon (tie)
  8. Physician (tie)
  9. Occupational therapist
  10. Physical therapist

To develop the list of the Top 25 Best Jobs in Healthcare, U.S. News & World Report used the following criteria:

  • Employment rate
  • Future job prospects
  • Median salary
  • Stress level
  • 10-year growth percentage
  • 10-year growth volume
  • Work-life balance

In addition to U.S. News & World Report's recent lists indicating the strength in the healthcare employment market, the Bureau of Labor Statics (BLS) declared that fourteen of the 20 highest paying occupations in 2016 were in the healthcare industry. Those include anesthesiologists, obstetricians, gynecologists and surgeons, with a median pay rate of $208,000 each per year, family and general practitioners with an average salary of $190,490 per year, and nurse anesthetists, who earned a median average pay rate of $160,270 during 2016.

To further validate the demand for healthcare professionals, the BLS also projected that healthcare -related job would be among the fastest growing occupations through 2016, comprising half of the top 20 on the list.
