Whether you’re on your first or your 100th travel nursing assignment, chances are you’ve had to deal with missing the people and places that you consider “home.” Nowadays, it’s easier to stay in touch with your loved ones no matter where you live or work, thanks to social media, cell phones and video chatting. Depending on where your travel nurse assignment is located, there are probably a number of local people, places and activities you can explore to elevate your spirits. Here are a few things you can try to overcome homesickness, no matter where your assignment happens to be located.

Join a Local Group has been helping people with shared interests do just that – meet up – in cities throughout the world. Connect to others who like to do the same things as you, from following sports activities and specific teams, to enjoying different types of food, coffee or beer, art, music and more. Whatever you’re into, you’re likely to find a Meetup group that you can join and go on group outings to restaurants, bars, concerts, art museums, sports games, tourist attractions and other events, depending on the group you join. Along with finding people who share your interests, you can find others who will help you break out of your comfort zone. Maybe you’ve always wanted to go skydiving, bowling or karaoke singing. Or maybe you’d like to try some of the local breweries or wineries but prefer to go with a group. Meetup is a great way to find people to join you in the things you already like to do or to explore something completely new.

Try A New Workout Class

It’s a proven fact that exercise can boost your spirits, and that goes for travel nurses who are feeling lonely on assignment. If you have a regular workout schedule, there’s no reason you can’t stick to it while you’re away to keep your endorphin supply elevated. No matter where you’re located, there are probably a number of gyms that you can join or may already be a member of. Even if you do work out regularly, both your mind and body can benefit from trying a new workout. Crossfit, Orange Theory, yoga, Pilates, HIIT and numerous other workouts are available at gyms and studios nationwide, and many offer a free or low-cost first class option. Being away on a travel nurse assignment is the perfect time to try new things, including a workout you haven’t tried before. Not only will it take your mind off your homesickness, but it will lift you out of your comfort zone in a positive way, and possibly lead to a healthy new interest that you can enjoy while you are away on assignment and back home, as well.

Enjoy a Spa Day – You Deserve it!

Travel nurses are used to taking care of everyone else, so sometimes it’s important to remind yourself to engage in some essential self-care. Allowing yourself to be pampered for as little as 30 minutes or up to a full day can have magical effects on your well-being. If you’re feeling homesick on your next travel nurse assignment, treat yourself to one or more of these services and you’ll surely turn your frown upside down. If you only have an hour to spare, consider a simple mani-pedi to help you relax and de-stress. If you usually just get the standard offering, ask to see their menu and maybe upgrade your service to include sugar scrub, paraffin mask or aromatherapy options. If you can give yourself a half or whole day, you can choose a combination of services that can have truly long-lasting effects on your state of mind. Body scrubs and peels, facials, massages and even a new haircut and style can lift your spirits and improve your outlook. If you find a spa that offers the types of services you think you might be interested in, you can often find specials on their website, by signing up for their email newsletter, or by following them on social media.
